Music in Panama

Music in Panama has a very rich history, and in that vain continues to promote live music, concerts, and special events.  Some very famous musicians have played in Panama, including recently Mandy Moore, Ricky Martin, Mana, and a number of world famous acts.  Figali is perhaps the most famous venue, although the acoustics leave a bit to be desired.  Teatro Nacional and the Teatro Anayansi are world class facilities that have begun hosting more events recently.  The last major act to pass through Panama was dancehall sensation and world famous singer Sean Paul.  The concert featured Sean Paul and his entourage playing to a sold out crowd at the Figali,  performing many of his chart toppers like “Temperature”, “Get Busy”, and a few new songs like “Break it off”.   The crowd definitely reciprocated the artists energy, and the show ended up being a resounding success.  Other big acts as far as music in Panama that are scheduled for the rest of the year include reggaeton sensation Don Omar, Electronic DJ Deep Dish, and jazz phenomenon Kenny G.  Other acts will be announced soon, however these are the confirmed bookings as of press time.

There are also a handful of musicians out of Panama who have gone on to enjoy world wide success.  Perhaps the most famous musician from Panama is Ruben Blades, who now serves as the director of tourism here in Panama.  In his heyday, Blades was the King of music in Panama, particularly Salsa.  In the world of jazz, Luis Russell shared the stage with Louie Armstrong in the ‘20’s, alongside another Panamanian Mauricio Smith.  Smith, a saxophonist and occasional flute player, played alongside the likes of Charlie Mingus, Dizzie Gillespie and the world famous Chubby Checker.

Rock group Los 33 have been living and touring in the US for the last 5 years, but will be returning to Panama on August 31st for a show at the Hard Rock Café, another good venue for live music in Panama. Spanish Rock is becoming very popular, with groups including Los Rabanes, Os Almirantes, Señor Loop, Roba Morena, Filtro Medusa, and Lemmiwinks, to name a few.  See our reggaeton section for more information about this genre  and other live music in Panama.

Unplugged Panama

Unplugged may be one of the best bars for Panama Music.  Just this past Saturday, I stumbled in at about midnight  and was immediately greeted with a familiar song:  Sedated by The Ramones.  Don’t get me wrong, there are a handful of radio stations down here that play rock and roll but their playlist is a bit limited.  (Think top 40 and Classic Rock).  That is all fine and good when you are trying to avoid salsa and reggaeton on the airwaves, but when I go out on a Saturday night I just cant rock out to Maroon 5 or Bob Seger.   Most of the rock music cover bands are limited to Spanish Rock (Rock en Espanol), like Heroes de Silencio, Mana, or any number of popular groups.  So to run into a band covering Green Day,  Nirvana, Audioslave, and Offspring,- is truly a find.  And these guys were dead on- going from Hendrix solos to driving riffs by American hard rockers like Tool and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.  Such range and depth is rare in the US, let alone Panama.  These kids were on point, and the crowd knew it.  By 2am the windows were rattling and the place had filled up.

Unplugged is becoming my favorite place to hear music in Panama because they have a “no typico, no reggaeton” policy that has earned them the distinction of a true rock bar.  Probably the only place that rivals Unplugged for live music is El Pavo Real, however the acoustics seem to be a bit better laid out in Unplugged.  Maybe it’s the records hanging from the ceiling or distinct lack of tables other than around the walls, but this place definitely has the feel of a good old fashioned rock club, much like the old CBGB’s in New York.  No cheesy memorabilia or drab decor, just bare bones and music oriented.  And for such a small bar area, you are never more than a few minutes away from a cold beer or a stiff drink.  If you are in to Panama music, then Unplugged is definitely worth a visit.  Small couches and tables line the inside of the club, with billiards in one corner and the bar opposite.  The patio is a great place to people watch and still enjoy the music from the inside.  It tends to get a bit loud, but what do you expect from a rock club.
